Lawndale City Council voted against an ordinance that would have allowed a local restaurant owner to open a Middle Eastern style restaurant on 167th Street with a hookah lounge on Hawthorne Boulevard.Hookahs are water pipes with long stems that allow users to smoke flavored tobacco as are commonly in use in Middle Eastern countries often at cafes. One Councilman, Larry Rudolph said he voted against the cigarette lounge and used his health issues with cigarette smoking as his main reasons. He said that at 39-years old he had his first triple bypass surgery, followed by another procedure 3-years later and 12-years later, he had congestive heart failure that required a heart transplant.
Nightclubs, cafes and establishments have come under scrutiny because there's a direct link between cigarette smoking and secondhand smoke in the growing numbers of citizens that develop lung cancer.
